Rams drop Buzz Levick opener to hot-shooting Blugolds

WAVERLY – Cornell's men's basketball team drew a tough opponent in Friday's Buzz Levick Tournament opener, falling 89-55 to UW-Eau Claire at Levick Arena. 

The young Rams (0-2) played seven first-years for 10-plus minutes against the hot-shooting Blugolds (3-0). UW-Eau Claire shot a torrid 54.5-percent from the floor and drained 13 triples, advancing to the championship game Saturday against Concordia (Wis.) at 4 p.m.

Cornell will face host Wartburg (2-1) in Saturday's consolation game at 2 p.m. 

Cornell received strong contributions from its newcomers, led by freshman guard Jude Weaver with 10 points, four rebounds and a steal. 

Wayne Jurica added nine points off the bench. Sophomore Keon Talgo tallied seven points, three rebounds, and a steal. Kylen Bonner chipped in six points. 

Ben Kmak dished out a team-high five assists. Nebil Mohammed notched four rebounds in his first career start. 

Cornell shot 34.6-percent from the floor, and converted 14-of-22 free throws. The Rams scuffled from behind the arc, making 5-of-28 from 3-point range. 

UW-Eau Claire outrebounded Cornell, 46-26. The Blugolds held a 53-27 advantage in bench points.
