MOUNT VERNON - Cornell's men's tennis team split two dual matches on Saturday at home in the arena of the Small Athletic and Wellness Center. The Rams (5-3) claimed a 6-1 win over Simpson College, following by a nail-biting 2-5 set back to Millikin University in the afternoon.
The Rams swept the doubles point over Simpson, only dropping two games.
Trent Devore and
Jack Saunders at No. 1,
Sam Cumicek and
Matthew Oshiro at No. 2, and
Eric Dirksmeyer and
Benett Gregor at No. 3 all breezed past the Storm.
The Rams claimed straight set wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 ssingles from Drew Campbell, Zachary Ong, Oshiro, Gregor and Dirksmeyer. Gavin Collyott dropped a tight 7-6 6-3 decision to Hudson Christie of Simpson at No. 2.
Against Millikin in the afternoon, the first time partner duo of Devore and Campbell edged out a 7-6(6) win at No. 2. The Big Blue secured the other two doubles matches to claim the doubles point heading into singles.
Devore and Collyott enjoyed thrilling third set super tiebreak wins at No. 1 and No. 6 for the Rams lone two points in the meet. Two other super tiebreakers were contested, with Millikin coming out on top.
Devore finished his Saturday 3-0 individually. Campbell enjoyed a 2-1 afternoon as well.
Coming up - The Rams travel to Madison, Wisconsin next weekend for a matchup with the University of Wisconsin-Superior. First serve is set for 12:15pm on Sunday Feb. 22.
