Maxey, Cotton finish third at Loras Open

DUBUQUE – Cornell women placed four wrestlers on the podium Saturday at the Loras Open, inside Lillis Athletic & Wellness Center.
 
Olivia Cotton was pinned by 9th-ranked Alex Hofrichter (Dubuque) in the first round. Hofrichter went on to win the 160-pound championship. After falling in the first round, Cotton then rolled off five consecutive wins to claim third place at 160 pounds. Her five victories included two tech falls and three pins.
 
In the third-place match Cotton pinned Katelyn Nosbich (UW-Stevens Point) in 33 seconds.  Cotton finished 5-1 for the day.
 
Tori Maxey finished third at 180 pounds. After losing her first-round match to eventual 180-pound champion Merin Yates by pin, Maxey put together three straight wins. In the third-place match Maxey pinned Aubrey Miller-Ramirez (Lakeland) in 3:59. Maxey finished 3-1.
 
Senior 117-pounder Cheyenne Mulford finished fourth, going 2-2. Mulford two victories were by decisions.
 
Cassidy Castro finished fifth at 160-pounds.  Castro went 3-2, including a first round tech fall over 4th-seeded Julia Van Buren (UW-Stevens Point).
 
Also competing for the Rams were Maddie Rose (160), Sidney Zimmerman (160) and Sydney Newberg (160).
 
Coming up – The Rams participate in the Quad Cities Division III Invitational Feb. 7-8, in East Moline, Ill.
