BELOIT, Wis. – Cornell's men's soccer season ended abruptly during an unfortunate sequence of late-match outcomes Saturday afternoon.
The Rams surrendered a tie-breaking goal in the 82nd minute of a tough 2-1 Midwest Conference loss at Beloit in the regular-season finale, and then saw their postseason chances dashed with Ripon's 3-1 win at Lawrence.
Cornell (7-9-1 overall, 4-3-1 MWC) finished tied with Ripon for fourth place in the final MWC standings with 13 points. Both teams also finished deadlocked in the first tiebreaker, points differential in MWC play.
Ripon's penalty kick goal in the 84th minute at Lawrence Saturday gave the Red Hawks one extra point they needed.
Ripon earned the fourth and final spot into the MWC Tournament on the second tiebreaker criteria based on its head-to-head win over the Rams, 1-0 at Ripon on Oct. 1.
Lake Forest claimed the regular-season title with 24 points. Beloit and Grinnell tied for second with 14.

Beloit evened the score in the 19th minute and the match remained 1-1 until the late stages of the second half.
The winning goal was set up by a Beloit corner kick, which the Rams initially headed away from the net. Beloit's Nicholas Williams gathered the deflection and fired a perfectly-placed shot into the back left corner of the goal with 7:16 left in regulation.
Antonio Russo led Cornell's offense with three shots, all on goal. Wight and
Will Davis had two attempts apiece.

Jack Massey finished with six saves in a complete-game effort. Beloit outshot the Rams, 10-9.
